Everyday I will complete an outdoor drawing of the night sky. I will begin with Polaris and add a new star each day for 117 days- the time in between my mother’s diagnosis with terminal cancer (12/3/07) and her death (4/26/08). My mother’s illness and death has left me feeling out of sync with the date and time. I will use this daily practice as way to reorient myself to the current moment utilizing the stars as a calendar.

Tonight I finished ursa minor- little bear/little dipper, my first constellation. I've been doing a little research about the little dipper and I found out two interesting things. 1. Ursa=bear in latin and ursa minor contains the north star, polaris. Polaris is a good place to start when trying to orient yourself in the night sky. This is where the phrase "get your bearings" comes from. yup thats right. 2. In Hindu mythology polaris is called Dhruva, for a extremely devout child who rocked Vishnu's world with his meditation. Vishnu appeared before him and a poem of praise poured out of the child. This poem is called the Dhruva Stuti, itunes has a lovely recording of it that has been rocking my world all week.
